Comparison of radiographic and tomographic evaluations for measurement of the Canal Flare Index in dogs

ABSTRACT The outcome of total hip arthroplasty (THA) in dogs is directly related to surgical planning. Templating radiographs prior THA should help the surgeon anticipate prosthesis size and femoral shape allowing canal fill proximal metaphysis by implant ensuring primary stable fixation. flare index (CFI) obtained from radiograph has been used as a measure risk complications for technique human beings dogs. However, standard only provide limited data selection cementless prostheses assessment their fit within canal, due factors like radiographic magnification rotation. Therefore, three-dimensional evaluation based on computed tomography (CT) may be better tool CFI measurement. aim this study was compare anatomical measurement with values craniocaudal radiography CT. Craniocaudal using horizontal beam (CR), CT, macroscopic measurements (A) were 45 femurs 23 canine cadavers. differences between (CFI-R), transverse (CFI- TT) longitudinal axis (CFI-TL) compared - gold (CFI-A), 95% limits agreement (LOA) values, evaluated Bland-Altman method. Dimensions CT techniques had greatest mean difference also different (P=0.032). Under experimental conditions, radiograph, provided most accurate (mean difference: 0.087 ± 0.42).
